My suspicion would normally be too excitable double-clicking...Since it's not happening to me, I think I may just experiment with the dblclick rate...

I think you hit it. I had a similar problem last year in an app where users complained that the textbox under the combo used for entering new data into the combo was appearing unexectedly. I played with the click rate and reduced, but did not eliminate the complaints until I also provided for a doubleclick on the textbox which restore focus to the combo. Then everyone was happy, especially me since I did not have to fool with it any longer.
