Roy Cohn (McCarthy's lawyer) was his lawyer long before Trump was even a candidate.

Cohn precept #3- any publicity is better than no publicity.

We've seen so much disgusting behavior from Trump that we tend to forget just how cynically destructive that birther nonsense was.
It was a deliberate, calculated lie aimed at drawing attention to himself.
I know people who still think that Obama isn't a US citizen.
