Even if, suppose you can't directly connect to VFP data, you can simply create a txt file as a 'data source', or directly write to a mailmerge documents' data document.

That makes sense Tamar. Around those years, I also remember posting here complaints about Office team breaking code with their updates and problems with ODBC access to VFP data (ended with a tab delimited text file data as a workaround if I remember right).
