Back in the mag tape days, a night shift operator in our dept encountered repeated failures while trying to read an important tape that had no backup.
He kept hitting the retry button for hours, and finally the read succeeded and he was able to finish the job.
I asked him what prompted him to keep hitting that button and he said something like:
"Why not?"
