IIRC there was a paper by Doug Hennig on CA, also a chapter on "Whats New in 9".
IAC when reading check the version of vfp described in the document: there were small changes in the settings for update and automatic (timestamp, author...) introduced in 9.

AFAIK no problems with CA on different versions - I drive 7423, but should be irrelevant.
