I agree with you that the user should have the choice/option. Look at the attached image. Back - many, many years ago - I decided that this light green color will be the background of a text box when in focus. And it has been this way "forever". But I need to change it; even I now strain my eyes when I see this color. So, user should be able to choose what they want.
