Then, virtually all kids got the shot so by 1957 there were 5,600 and by 1961 only 161 cases. What I know to be a fact doesn't match what I read in Wikipedia in regards to the Sabin oral vaccine. I know that while I was in high school we all received the Sabin sugar cube prior to June 1960. Wikipedia says that the Sabin vaccine wasn't released until 1961.

It's not even slightly realistic to compare anything to do with medicine and medical care from 1955 to how it is in 2020.
You might want to see what Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar had to say about the cost of this vaccine - in a nutshell he will do nothing whatsoever to control the price, and I assume that is what Bernie was referring to. Alex Azar's take on it is that the private sector needs to make money off it and that is more important than keeping the price down. In other words screw poor people and protect the rich and pharmaceutical corporations, even if people die because of it.
