Is there a proper name for this table setup?
Hi,
Out of curiosity, is there a proper name for a table "within" a table (intentionally adding quotes) where there are two distinct type of records that are related to each other.
For example, I have a Plaintiff table and the only difference between plaintiffs and subplaintiffs is that the subplaintiffs are linked to the master plaintiff. e.g. someone is in a car accident and the main plaintiff is the mother and her children, also injured, are subplaintiffs. Everything is the same between plaintiffs and subplaintiffs (e.g. names fields, address fields, phones etc.) other than the "link" between the records.
My original design had both these types of records in the same plaintiff table with the subplaintiffs pointing back to the master plaintiff via storing the master plaintiff ID as "parent_ID". I have heard people call this setup as a "subtable" with a table - but some people refer to subtables as to what I would call a child table.
See attached picture of the relationship
