I might have told this story before here. If so, fast forward and forgive me. At this age these things blur.
My aunt Eunice – my mother’s youngest sister – had four children.
Winifred - Winnie – the youngest – was a bright, vivacious, tall, stunning redhead who died tragically in her forties from breast cancer- leaving a grieving husband and three redheads.
Aunt Eunice called and asked if I’d like to attend a memorial service for Winnie in the rotunda of the capitol in Washington, DC.
Senators from each state had been asked to name two breast cancer victims to be memorialized at a ceremony in the capitol. Their pictures and biographies would be displayed in a carousel in the rotunda.
Winnie’s widower, Don, had been Joe Biden’s roommate at the University of Delaware and Joe named Winnie and another victim for Delaware.
I took the Metroliner down and met my aunt, my cousins and Winnie’s family at the rotunda. Joe was there with the family and greeted me warmly. The ceremony was heart-wrenching – children read memories of their late mothers.
That’s a horrible disease.
Afterward, Joe invited us back to his office where aunt Eunice, being aunt Eunice, began to tell Joe how to run the United States of America. Don had invited me to have dinner with the family before returning to New York, so while Joe listened dutifully to aunt Eunice, Don and I went down to the rotunda to wait for everyone.
We waited longer than expected and then one of my cousins came and told us that my aunt had collapsed in Joe’s office. Joe had called 911 and gone to the ER with her.
We learned that it was a false alarm- but they wanted her to stay the night. Joe stayed in the room with her till she was discharged the next morning and her children took her home.

Character matters.
Anyone who does not go overboard- deserves to.
