Used VirtualDub (open source) for a while, but it's only for removing stuff, i.e. cutting out scenes you don't want. If you want to move them around, mix sound differently etc, you need a real editor.

Then I bought Magix (german, 50€ or so), which is a complete emulation of what I was doing with 8mm 50 years ago, i.e. full editing plus mixing (fadeouts, fadeovers, sound editing... everything I could think of, it had), plus you can add clips in different formats, insert photographs, insert text (writing your own credits is quite simple) etc etc. I was quite happy with it, but stopped using it because I never had the time. Also, its names for places where what goes confused me thoroughly - one of those which complicates things by trying to hide the filesystem from the user - so for some things I never found where it put the end result.

Instead of learning how to tame it... I abandoned windows, and didn't even look if they had a linux version. I guess there's something decent in linux, if I ever wanted to play with it.
