I would like to, if at all possible, not to make manual changes in the registry. So, I am wondering, is it possible to make the user name change without editing the registry?

Is there any reason why you can't simply create a new user, move the documents and such over to the new user, then delete the old one? Granted, this requires you to go through some some re-doing some of your configurations...
What's been a pain since Windows 8 is creating new users -- if you want to use the "classic" style users that's not connected with any Microsoft account (i,e. not having your Windows sign-on being tied to an E-mail account), you've got to select option for this (hidden in plain sight). It's a tad trickier with Windows 10 as the process requires you to jump through a couple not-so-obvious hoops to do the same.
