The trick was for pageframes - since I had to have two browser windows on the same page, and hide one or both, depending on what the user is doing. Well, hiding didn't quite work each time on each box, there were weird effects. So the trick was to create/destroy instead of show/hide. Unbelievable, it almost seemed faster that way.
