Just a shot in the dark. Have you tried to trim the text? This should do the trick:

Thanks for the reply. I didn't try that, mostly as even for "blank" fields the grey rectangle / dots appear, so I expect it will continue to do so. Further, since embedded spaces (like between first and last names) also have the two dots I'm not sure it will solve the issue. But will give it a try shortly.
