One other thought for you to check on with your client environment...

Other applications which can create similar issues as anti-virus software without proper exclusions are online backup systems running while during business hours. We have seen software like Mozy or Carbonite intermittently grab and lock files if IT schedules a backup process during the day. They will claim it should not interrupt the software but that has proven to be false.
