If I'm not mistaken the "SET PRINTER TO device" format of the command dates back to DOS days, where device was usually one of the DOS devices (e.g. LPT1, LPT2, COM1, COM2, etc.) --- and as such, probably handles the printer in a manner that a DOS program would (expecting to directly communicating with printer.
