One can scan headlines in many publications to see what's topical, what's being spoken about, then scan a quick read and delve into it more in numerous additional places. MSM carry headlines, they show what narrative they are promoting, and sometimes something might be interesting to dig into. Sometimes articles come up in searches or are referred to us via friends or colleagues, etc. Lots of reasons why one gets exposure to MSM including wanting to understand what the general news drift in the world is. I try to look at a lot of different sources but as a default position MSM would be the least trustworthy imo.
