I guess the part I' missing is how to communicate with the device once you have the appropriate device driver loaded. In the past, I've communicated using the serial port using MSCOMM32.OCX - the serial port is not an option now. This is probably obvious, but not to me. Any nudge in the right direction would be appreciated.
