GitHub for most scenarios is free.

Note: Github is host - Git is the protocol and there are a number of other hosts you can use. Github is by far the most popular and also has the best user experience of the Web site for issue tracking, Pull Requests etc.

I've been putting **EVERYTHING** I work on onto GitHub both in public and private repositories.

Can't imagine working without Git at this point.
