Good quote.
This quote reminds me of another very popular quote in the Soviet Union. The SU had no rich, no poor, everybody was making about the same amount of money (pretty much what Bernie advocates). One of the examples was the doctors made the same (or even less) than a guy who was turning nuts and bolts at a factory. This "equality" created such a lack of desire or motivation to work or improve the quality of service that the quote was "They pretend they pay us; and we pretend we work."
