If the user gets an email with a link, they can quit their software, click the link, get upgraded and launch the app again. Even a nice installer can shutdown the app, replace it and relaunch. That is what Windows intends, no? These fancy launchers are not normal.

In the most common scenario we work with, administrators are notified of new versions, deploy the app updates in a distribution folder in the organization network, and the launchers take care of the rest. Normally, regular users are not allowed to install or update anything in their machines.

When a new version of the launcher is distributed, a signed MSI installer does the required updates, but this process normally requires administration privileges. Therefore, we try to keep them to a minimum.
