it's not widely known that US district court judges make sure that federal laws are followed.
This fella made himself very unpopular in the suburbs around Boston by mandating school bussing to assure equal education for minority kids. Now that's some serious activism.
Judge Garrity's decision to enforce the law of the land made him very unpopular with his own people (my people too.) So unpopular that he was he was given 24/7 protection.

Fast forward a few years when I'm the sole witness for a corporate plaintiff in a civil trial in a federal court in Boston- can't give details- but Judge Garrity heard the case.
Given his reputation as a flaming leftie, we were afraid.
Judge Garrity was meticulously fair and impartial and we got a verdict for the plaintiff.
