Interesting question and thread. I just tried the "multi-column" functionality of notepad++ and I do not like it.

I have not used more recent text editors solutions such the ones that are included in recent IDEs. But I look forward for solutions that would be more pleasant to work with than the good old notepad++. But, to get perfectly clear, are you looking for a "text editor" or some sort of "word processor"?
