Note the chosen word, spell. It implies witches...

The case you found is where IT imitates life. Look at the word threshold. It's actually read as threshhold, because you pronounce both sh and then h, but in standard spelling there's a single aitch, which is, ahem, reused, which is where life imitates programming.
