When I think (often) that things look pretty bleak politically here now, I recall how I first learned the meaning of "FUBAR."

During the early eighties I was asked to try to rescue a mini-based BASIC application being used by a US sub of a fairly large Germany-based company.

Those of you can can recall those days will remember how awful it was to work with BASIC, but Irish stubbornness kicked in and I tackled it (and the rates were really good.)
This was pre IBM PC so things were fairly primitive but with a lot of persistence, you could get these things to work, so I plowed into the code.
When I came to the module that was causing the issues, I came across a comment that the previous programmer had left for the poor souls who might follow.

"FUBAR"

I'd never seen it so I did some checking around to decipher my predecessor's missive.
It was that programmer's version of Dante's warning "Abandon hope all ye who enter here."
Actually, the missive was wrong.
With a lot of research, I came to see that the app really needed just a few tweaks.
I got that app running well, got to cash some juicy checks and had a happy, thankful and lucrative client.

I think of that app when I look at US politics.
It looks pretty hopeless at times, but to paraphrase TE Lawrence:

"Nothing is FUBAR."
Anyone who does not go overboard- deserves to.
