>>I never said you cannot get by without it. I said that based on all the crap I have seen and continue to see, and the people who cannot even debug 3 lines of code because of a missing mdot, it is necessary.
I'm going to play the great philosopher: I present the Rule of Ryan, which is that most human conflict condenses down to one word: Respect. Lack of it, or demand for it, or even oversupply of it, seems to accompany most human conflict/bad outcomes that could have been avoided.
Rule of Ryan # 2 is that you cannot change others, only the way you react to them.
Rule of Ryan # 3 is that humans are not rational creatures, they are rationalizing creatures. Meaning that some will rationalize Rule #1 as validation of perceived lack of respect towards themselves, rather than reflecting on Rule # 2.
None of the above is new; every organized religion has a version while propagandists use variants especially of #1 and #3 to manipulate others.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us."
-- Shakespeare: Coriolanus, Act 1, scene 1
