I'd seen on some laptops and convertible (i.e. can be used in laptop mode, or have keyboard folded back for tablet mode) where the RJ-45 socket for Ethernet is "hidden" as it is normally in "collapsed" state --- it's found within a "door panel" along the edge that swings open to become a RJ-45 socket (otherwise a normal RJ-45 socket is too tall to fit within the thin laptop body). Perhaps your laptop has one of these "collapsible" Ethernet jack?
