When you wrote "modem", I thought you meant the kind of modem we used in the good old days to connect the computer to a phone line, sorry about that. The connector you are describing is called RJ45. As Naoto writes, it's probably hidden behind a cover, I have also seen "weird" dual connectors.

I haven't heard of any laptop coming without a network connector, unless it's really old or really cheap. If it really comes without it, you may have to buy an external adapter. Google "usb network adapter ethernet" and you will find a lot of different models.
