I'm reading that while viral particles are very small, most Covid is spread attached to something else- like aerosolized cough particles, which are quite a big bigger, or some suggest that particulate air pollution is a potential carrier. While very interesting, I go back to the point that *no* mask is effective if not used properly, and most people don't use masks properly. My expectation is that when this comes out eventually, perhaps some Western populations will be outraged that "proper use" wasn't emphasized enough in the groupthink.

He must be a political survivor to be still there after so long but perhaps he's as much a victim as an instigator of the politics. I suspect that when Fauci started making noises about double masking, the political judgment was that such announcement could trigger the robust US individualistic relationship with government, meaning acceptance of masking advice or mandate could be at risk. If he was silenced, perhaps Fauci hoped that wearing the double mask himself might be noticed to force the issue.

Of course we agree that allowing people to believe in ineffective measures is unscientific, even antisocial. However, in modern climes where opposing official narratives is a definition of misinformation, likely to lead to orchestrated social media or even financial othering: any changed message needs to be led from the top to gain traction. For whatever reason, it's not happening. Perhaps it appeals to authoritarian types that they can get their subjects to perform pointless rituals, or perhaps leadership is overwhelmed by the uncertainty and potential political cost of not going with the flow. Who knows.
