You completely forgot that SFRY was not part of any bloc. It was non-aligned.
I visited USSR twice, after being three times to Italy, once to Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia and Netherlands and a few dozen times to Romania and Hungary. Because I could, travel was available. Very different from USSR. So don't try to pretend that what you know about one applies to the other.
