FORTRAN was my second language (after machine language) and was a wonderful surprise. By that time I had moved into management and coding by managers was frowned upon, so I hung around at night and ran my stuff on an IBM 1401 when no one was looking.
The problem was predicting the running time of tape sorts on main frames (surprise - it's not dependent on the number of records.)
It was a logarithmic problem and I got it to run on the first shot.
It remains one of my favorite languages.
