In VFP because of dynamic table names to an otherwise static SELECT SQL.
To avoid collisions with double named tables for self-joins or two databases.
If you use, like me, generic field names, to fast copy'n'paste and reuse between SQL commands.
For (stacked) sub selects make level of sub readable.
