Backup Solution.xml or YourProject.slx, depending on which you have, and then edit it using Notepad (or VFP) and blank the Class attribute of the VersionControl element. That'll tell Project Explorer to not use version control. Note that this doesn't turn off version control, just the integration with Project Explorer.
