As Lutz said, step 1 is getting comfortable with Git. Rick Borup is the reason I started using version control. His introduction to Mercurial finally broke through for me. Here's his introduction to Git:

If you go that route and you prefer not to convert your SCX/VCX files to text before committing them, be aware that I've written an add-on for SourceTree that lets you use Beyond Compare on those files.
