https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftedge/forum/all/enable-activex-control-in-microsoft-edge-latest/979e619d-f9f2-47da-9e7d-ffd755234655

I can confirm that Chromium Edge does not support ActiveX; however, it does allow Group Policies or individual browser settings so your URL opens in IE11 compatibility mode that does support ActiveX. We have this up and working reliably. I can't see this going away unless/until MS provides some other way to automate Word or other ActiveX functionality from the browser.

Meanwhile, Tamar has reported elsewhere that changing version does not resolve her issue. I had thought it possible that some newer OS simply left some older bits out, as happened to some of the VC++7 runtimes that used to ship with Windows, so that using a newer version might suddenly start working again- but obviously not that.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
