Yeah, study the old database until you understand what tables hold what data. When you understand that, the solution should be clear.
Or, work with a sub-set of data if that helps. Or, come-up with some new data. Fit that data into the old database and into the new. Now write code that will convert that data from the old to the new. That code should generally work for all the old data. If it doesn't, then fix it.
