Hi Daniel,
The VFP grid is something special. And, it is built on the blood, sweat, and tears of those of us who encountered crashes when clicking from one column to another. I have a vivid memory of sitting in my car talking on my bag phone with another developer about the steps to replicate -- so I could report the issue. So I could hold up the impending release of the Release Candidate.
The horror, the horror ...
I doubt you will find a replacement that does the optimized buffering of the VFP grid.
The good news is: welcome to the world of web development constraints. :)
