As for the Dir v Fold - I believe (from classes in the 1960's) the folder came
from the conversion of physical "file cabinets" and the "file folders" contained in
the drawers of the cabinets and the "records" contained in file folders. It was meant
as a way to visualize the computer concept to something that people understood.
