Because each column will have a column line (if columnlines set on), when the grid is being "scrolled", the column lines sit next to each other, thickening the right edge of the last "locked" column. If you do not want the columns to appear, there are two possible options if you have discretion as to the order in which columns are placed.
1. Put all "invisible" columns on the far left of the grid, then set the .leftcolumn property to the number of the first visible column, or
2. Plate all "invisible" columns on the far right of the grid, and merely dimension the grid so that the far right columns are not visible.
