Erik,
This may be really a dumb suggestion but did you include the quotes in the string? IOW, this gives me the same error you get:
dbsetprop('temp','view', 'ruletext', 'Goobers!' )
But with the inner quotes...
dbsetprop('temp','view', 'ruletext', '"Goobers!"' )
...all is well.
