Yep, I figured it out after a while. Instead of labels I used a variable that is set to blank in an IIF() statment if the key field is empty. May not be elegant, but it works.

>Yes, indeed (unfortunately) all the items in the band need to be blank. This is a PIA. For labels...Hm. My labels are usually in the band line above (so they don't repeat). I guess you could use a field control that is equal to blank if your "blank condition" is met, or equal to the text of label otherwise.
