You might try Rick Strahl's web site at www.west-wind.com for any freebies and demo's he has there.

If you start with his product, you get good documentation and the tools to get started with right away. I use it for our intranet with excellent results. Your best bet, IMHO, is to hold out, if at all possible, for Rick's book.
