FWIW, there's a store down the road from me that let's you 'try before you buy'. For a $5-$25 non-refundable 'deposit' you can 'borrow' software for two or three days. If you decide to buy it, the deposit is applied to the purchase price; otherwise you simply return the software. Of course there is a disclaimer about removing the software from your machine on the rental agreement - which they make you sign.
