could go back to the views (or sql into cursor), refreshed for each record - but if I'm missing something that would make my life easier and my application faster, I'd like to learn about it!

IMHO, moving from p-views to relationships in the DE is a step in the wrong direction. When I first started building 1-M forms I was doing it with relationsships. I soon ran into many complications and VFP quirks. I found (mostly through answers from people here) workarounds to most of them, but every reply came with the advice to go to pviews. I after I finally heeded the advice, I never looked back, because in the long run pviews are easier, more powerful, flexible and definitely more dependable.
