I was getting the error when I have a remote view with fields from two tables. I was using the second table to bring in descriptive information, but I didn't want to update records or insert new records into the second table. I didn't allow updates to the fields from the second table. When I inserted a record to the view, I would get the error message.

Is this similar to what you are trying?
