If you're doing anything which moves the record pointer before you want to commit changes, you have to use Table buffering instead of Row buffering.
If you're using Row buffering, any command which moves the record pointer (or the user moving in a grid control, for example), forces an implicit TABLEUPDATE().
I use Table buffering for just this reason...
