1) To have the status bar show at all, SET STATUS BAR ON
2) To cripple system messages, SET MESSAGE OFF
3) If you want your own message to show, SET MESSAGE TO "..."

in my common open table routine, after actually opening the table (DBF), I repeat steps 2 and 3 enforcing my own use of the Status Bar: [xxx] [yyy] etc.
