A functional conversion will convert all your 2.6 screens and code in VFP and create an (ahem) functional application. A visual conversion will convert ONLY the screen into VFP forms and will put all the codes in a big PRG file for reference. It will be up to you to put the code back into the forms. You can't run this application right after the conversion.
I would go for a functional conversion only for small projects. You miss many new features of VFP this way (OOP) and the converted application not only look ugly, but isn't fully functional. You will have to fix some codes here and there. For bigger applications, it will take you about the same effort to convert it vs rewriting it from scratch.
I would go for a visual conversion for anything other than a small application.
