Actually you *_can_* purchase the updates as part of the MSDN package, the Universal subscription includes the OEM SUR release.

There is NO upgrade path to NT, the partitions are a one-way translation :-( So if you want to upgrade to NT4, then you presumably have to reformat and install from scratch.
