You probably don't have the latest version of VFP 5. Type ?VERSION() from the command window. The version number should end in 0415. If it doesn't, go to http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/sp/vs97/default.asp and order or download Visual Studio 97 Service Pack 3. It will probably fix the problem you're having.
