Yes, that's what I tried to do, with no success. On the other hand, cannot be sure that original software is what got installed.

I have even, late last night, re-installed Win98, hoping that would surely put original s/w back. Still same problem, so now the cable is my best hope.

I then started to look at the machines configuration, I boiled it down to the Protocol installation being corrupt, so I uninstalled the Networking from the win9x machine. the reinstalled after rebooting and all worked okay.
